Things to Do in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik (formerly Ragusa) is a city in Croatia, located on the shores of the Adriatic Sea. Although the population of Dubrovnik is only about 43,000, the city is quite popular among tourists. In fact, Dubrovnik is one of the most popular seaside cities on the Adriatic seashore.
If you are planning a trip to Dubrovnik, here’s a guide on things to see and do in the city.

Dubrovnik Old Town

Dubrovnik Old Town

Dubrovnik Old Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. And it makes sense because the Old Town of the city is truly a place that you should visit at least once in your life. Start from the Minceta Tower, one of the symbols of Dubrovnik. Then go to the famous Walls of Dubrovnik to enjoy the amazing views of the Adriatic Sea. After the City Walls walk to the Pile Gate and Bokar Fortress, they are located not far from each other. On the way to Dubrovnik Cathedral, don’t forget to visit Dubrovnik Ethnographic museum. When passing by the narrow old streets, make sure to check the Dubrovnik Cathedral, Dubrovnik City Hall, and the Theatre. You won’t want to miss Revelin Fortress.

Dubrovnik Beaches

If you visit Dubrovnik in summer, you will need a Dubrovnik beach guide. Since the city is located beside the Adriatic Sea, finding a perfect beach is not a problem. However, several beaches are very popular with both locals and tourists.

The most popular beaches in Dubrovnik are Banje beach, Copacabana, St Jakov beach, Lapad beach and, Mlini Bay beaches. If you do not like crowds of people, you might want to consider visiting less popular beaches of Dubrovnik. We recommend Porporela Pier, located near the Old Town; Buza, which offers a unique cliff jumping experience to the tourists; and Dance beach, consisting of several large rocks, where locals love to relax on hot sunny days.

Dubrovnik Museums

Since Dubrovnik has a very rich and long history, museums also play an important part in city life. There are five popular museums: the Cultural History Museum, the Dubrovnik Natural History Museum, the Ethnographic Museum, and the Archaeological Museum. Depending on what you are more into, you will find something interesting in each of the museums. For example, the Cultural History Museum has been an official residence of the rector of Ragusa. Dubrovnik Natural History Museum was established in 1872 and has a collection of 100-year-old taxidermy specimen. The Maritime Museum offers a rich collection of historic artifacts, maps, and instruments related to maritime trade. The Ethnographic Museum has been the official granary of Ragusa. The Archaeological Museum has very interesting exhibitions, but does not have a permanent location yet!

Lokrum Island

Lokrum Island

Lokrum Island is technically not in Dubrovnik because it’s located 600 meters away from the city in the Adriatic Sea. To get to the island, you will need to take a ferry or a taxi boat. By ferry, you can get to the island in 10 to 15 minutes. Even though Lokrum is a small island, there is a small lake located on the island; it’s called the Dead Sea (Mrtvo More). Besides the lake, you can visit Lokrum botanical garden and the abandoned monastery, located near the Dead Sea.

Bars

Cultural life in Dubrovnik is very interesting, but the city’s nightlife is also important, so here are several bars that you can visit in Dubrovnik.

The city is very popular for its cave bars. There are 2 bars that you must visit when in Dubrovnik. Buza bar is located on the steps of a natural cave and offers a cliff jumping experience. Cave Bar More is located inside a natural cave and has a fantastic atmosphere.
